The Daily Show's Jessica Williams exposes the narrative Detroit's mainstream media delivers — Detroit's poor residents live with a "sense of entitlement" — to be a myth. Detroit News editor Nolan Finely tells Williams, "What happens with these protestors here is they don't care about what happens to this city next. That sense of entitlement is one of our biggest problem. Why aren't you paying?"
To which Williams replies, "Why aren't these people paying? It's the perfect scheme. Step one: Be Poor; Step two: Get free water; number three: Have your water turned off; step four: What is step four? "
Nolan says the residents who don't pay their water bills are "freeloaders."
For sure, no one has asked for "free water." Williams interviews attorney Alice Jennings who represents residents who've had their water shut off. Jennings says, "No one is asking for free water. What we've asked for is affordable payment plans."
Finley tells Williams, anyone who doesn't pay their bill should have their water shut off. But as Williams shows and as this paper has reported, big corporations that have not paid their water bills, like Joe Louis Arena, Ford Field and Palmer Park Golf Course, still have running water. These entities collectively owe millions of dollars.
To date 31,500 homes in Detroit have had their water shut off.
