Noel Night in Detroit brings shopping, music,holiday cheer

By Steve Furay Special to The Michigan Citizen  Noel Night is an annual celebration that brings metro Detroit families into the Midtown district for shopping, music, entertainment, and holiday cheer. On Saturday, December 6 from 5 p.m. until late evening, the city streets will be alive in the seasonal chill. Highlights of the evening include performances by Thornetta Davis, Heritage Works ‘Kwanzaa Salute’ , jessica Care moore with Kenny Watson, and a special performance by Legacy of Funk, featuring Parliament-Funkadelic members in a live funk and hip hop jam. COURTESY PHOTO[/caption] Noel Night is coordinated annually by Midtown Detroit, Inc., with interfaith, multicultural holiday celebrations held in shops, museums, churches and community centers in the district. Participating in the special event are the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Michigan Science Center, Detroit Public Library, N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art and more. The Legacy of Funk will perform on the D. Blair Stage of the Cass Corridor Commons (4605 Cass) following a hip hop performance at 6pm, a follow up to their much talked about October performance on Oakland Avenue in the North End for the O.N.E. Mile project. The Oakland Avenue Artists Coalition will present the Mothership, a mobile art and performance space, which made its debut at the same concert. Hip hop performances, featuring Bryce and DJ Los, will celebrate indigenous ancestral heritage with positive, engaged lyrics from youth and some of the city’s leading nationally-recognized community performers. In the sanctuary of the Cass Corridor Commons, Thornetta Davis will feature her legendary soul vocals at 9 p.m., proceeded by a local music spotlight of school and community ensembles, 5:30-8 p.m. Poet jessica Care moore will perform poems and songs with songwriter and acoustic guitarist Kenny Watson at the Scarab Club (217 E. Farnsworth) at 7:30 p.m., where her new book ‘Sunlight Through Bullet Holes’ will be available. Hardcore Detroit, the city’s premier hip hop dance group, will have two performances, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., at 3535 Cass Avenue, also home to Back Alley Bikes, which will hold a raffle for bikes, and Ocelot Print Shop, where guests can print holiday cards. The new documentary DVD “The Jitterbugs: Pioneers of the Jit,” a rare film made in the city of Detroit dance pioneers, will be available for sale at the event. The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (315 E. Warren) will feature Heritage Works ‘Kwanzaa Salute’ on the GM Stage at 8:45 p.m., with African drumming and dance to recognize the seven principles of Kwanzaa. The current exhibit Inspiring Minds: African Americans in Science and Technology will be open, and performances will also include Ballet Renaissance, Academy of Public Leadership Chorale, Mosaic Singers, and The Pierians Detroit Chapter, plus crafts and activities for the family. The Michigan State University-Detroit Center (3408 Woodward at Rosa Parks Blvd) will host a special Cass Tech Dance Workshop, as the nationally recognized high school dance ensemble will perform at 6pm. At 9pm will be Omowale African Dance and Percussion, presenting West African drumming and dancing with cultural history and audience participation. At the Detroit Public Library (5201 Woodward), the Winans Academy of Performing Arts will feature dance, vocal performances and orchestra at 6:45pm on the first floor, followed by the Urban Stringz youth string orchestra at 8:30pm. Award winning Detroit jazz artist Marvin Thompson Jr. will have two performance, 8:15pm & 9:15pm. The N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art (52 E. Forest) will spotlight current exhibitions and host a retail space with Detroit is the New Black, with DJ Syd spinning jazz and house throughout the evening. The band Collective Peace will perform their jazz and soul music at the Detroit Association of Women’s Club (5461 Brush), which will also host shopping, Hustle and Zumba lessons, and quilt displays. Church (5050 St. Antoine) will host choir and school music ensembles, including Commonwealth Academy Dance Team, Duke Ellington School Dance Team, and the Jazz & Spirit Dance Theatre of Detroit, beginning at 4:45 p.m. The Cathedral Church of St. Paul (4800 Woodward) will feature a performance from the 35-piece Five Lakes Silver Band at 8pm, with building tours and live animals in their nativity on Woodward Avenue. Stores will stay open late with holiday sales, treats and entertainment at The Black Dress Co. (87 E. Canfield), Bob’s Classic Kicks (4717 Woodward), Busted Bra Shop (15 E.
